A novel in three-sixty : 91 days left and my bathroom mirror has me feeling all types of ways
You ever wake up in the morning, look in the mirror, and think everything is wrong? I am having one of those days. So as I practice internal grace, here are some of the ART I’ve been leaning on to distract me from my body struggles.
I was curled up under the covers when I scrolled past This Book.
In glittering Shanghai, a monster awakens.
I read the first line and sat up.
Its eyes snap open in the belly of the Huangpu River, jaws unhinging at once to taste the foul blood seeping into the waters. Lines of red slither through this ancient city’s modern streets: lines that draw webs in the cobblestones like a network of veins and drip by drip these veins surge into the waters, pouring the city’s life essence into the mouth of another.
I am usually not a fan of heavy description. I like fast-paced books and I find a lot of description tends to slow the momentum of a story. But Gong’s depiction is so well done you can literally see the scene unfolding and each striking image just adds to the vicious but beautiful tapestry she’s weaving. It makes me want to take my time, squeeze every drop of delicious tartness from each word.
Safe to say, this was a quick buy
There are films about Jesus, and then there is the Book of Clarence. This movie was aesthetically stunning, mentally stimulating, and comedically brilliant. If you’re looking for something new to watch, this is it.
Nicola Walker’s voice is so damn soothing, it should come with its own prescription. Whenever my mind is racing and I can’t fall asleep, I open the BBC Radio App and set the timer to play Annika Stranded for 3hours. 5minutes in, I am thoroughly zonked out.
The story is nice too.
When I eventually return to the mirror that started this downward spiral, I will be armed with Blowin’ Smoke by Teddy Swims.
Gas me Teddy! Gas me!
And that’s where I’m at this Thursday. Until next week, I’m wishing you all the very best of company. ♥️
